Salem School District Engages Students Through Robust Network Infrastructure

E-Rate Helps Keep District’s Students and EdTech Well-Connected

“It can be challenging to set up coverage of live events from our gymnasium and performing arts center, but with Extreme Networks, there has never been a network issue.”Chris Hazel, television/media production teacher at Salem Public Schools

The success of EdTech at Salem School District is in a big way due to the strong collaboration across departments within the district, according to IT Director David Hasbany. This includes working closely with teachers, finance, and administration. Their robust infrastructure enables 3500 students and 280 teachers to flexibly connect wireless devices to the Internet as well as to projectors in the classrooms.

With E-rate funding, SSD was able to refresh 170 Wi-Fi access points across their five elementary schools, middle school, high school, and the Salem Career & Technical Education Center. Each classroom in the district has its own Wi-Fi access point. The district uses Google Classroom integrated with their G Suite services to keep communication flowing among teachers and students, both in and out of class.

Video plays an important role at the district both in education and in related sports and drama activities. The high bandwidth Extreme Networks infrastructure has enabled the school to stream live basketball games using multiple cameras through YouTube. In the video below, Chris Hazel, television/media production teacher at Salem Public Schools, and IT Director David Hasbany describe the benefits of working with Extreme Networks to provide the best possible wired and wireless network for education.
